   Pint-sized picassos:  K-4

I strongly believe that the basic elements and principles of art, serve as a building block towards gaining confidence, creativity, problem solving, willingness for risk taking, and another valuable outlet for self -expression.  We explore the principles and application of line, color, shape, form, value, texture, and space.  By evaluating and discussing peers’ work, as well as examples from various periods, movements, and cultures, children learn to gain respect for differences in themselves and others.  Students learn about master artists throughout history and artistic movements, --impressionist, cubism, expressionist, abstract, pop art, etc.   Every child that enters our art room, is made well aware that they are entering a safe place where all work, even mistakes, are part of the creative process.  Children get the opportunity to experiment with many mediums and tools to create unique and meaningful "masterpieces".  Some of these include acrylic, watercolors, tempera, pastels, colored pencils, markers, charcoal, and various fabrics and paper for collage projects.  Most work created is put in a portfolio to be sent home at the end of the school year. Grades are based on effort, participation, originality, craftsmanship, behavior, and growth.
